Some leaders measure success by the years they serve.
Others measure success by what continues long after they are gone.
For nearly five decades, John Husk has dedicated his career to building stronger businesses, developing stronger leaders, and strengthening the communities they serve. As he prepares for retirement after 49 years in the agriculture industry—including 26 years in the cooperative system, 23 years with privately held organizations, and the past five years helping lead Farmward Cooperative—his legacy can be found not only in the facilities that were built or the businesses that grew, but in the people, culture, and vision he leaves behind.
Since joining Farmward as Chief Executive Officer in 2021, John has helped guide the cooperative through one of the most transformative periods in its history. He played a pivotal role in shaping the vision of a unified Farmward, bringing together legacy organizations under a shared purpose while building a culture centered on accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
John has always believed that success is about creating an organization where employees take pride in their work, where customers know they can depend on you, and where every decision is made with future generations in mind.
Throughout his career, John earned a reputation for seeing opportunities where others saw challenges. Whether leading major capital investments, developing new business strategies, expanding operations, or introducing leadership development programs, he consistently focused on positioning organizations for long-term success rather than short-term gains.
He believed that developing people was one of the most important investments any organization could make. His leadership style over his career was equally hands-on.
John never asked others to do work he wasn't willing to do himself. He walked facilities, visited locations, challenged teams to improve, celebrated wins, and encouraged employees at every level to take ownership of their responsibilities. He believed that the best ideas often came from those closest to the work and empowered people throughout the organization to lead, innovate, and make decisions.
He also understood that excellence is found in the details.
From facility cleanliness and operational excellence to customer experience and profitability, John challenged the organization to think differently about what it means to serve members. His philosophy was simple: provide products, services, and solutions as if we had a stake in every customer's bottom line.
That mindset helped shape Farmward into a cooperative focused not only on today's success, but on advancing farming for generations.
As agriculture continued to evolve, John embraced change rather than resisting it. He encouraged innovation, welcomed new ideas, and continually sought ways to improve both the business and the employee experience. His vision helped position Farmward as a modern cooperative prepared to meet the changing needs of agriculture and diversifying, while remaining grounded in cooperative values.
As he reflects on his career, John points not to individual accomplishments, but to the people he worked alongside.
"I have been incredibly fortunate to spend my career in agriculture during a time of remarkable transformation,"John said. "My time at Farmward has been especially meaningful, and I am deeply grateful for the relationships built, the challenges we've tackled, and the accomplishments we've achieved together. I have great confidence in Dennis and the entire team as they continue to move Farmward forward."
That confidence speaks to perhaps John's greatest accomplishment.
Strong organizations don't wait until retirement to think about succession. They intentionally develop leaders, build capable teams, and prepare the next generation to carry the mission forward. Through years of mentoring, coaching, and investing in people, John helped build a leadership team ready to guide Farmward into its next chapter.
Following his retirement, current COO, Dennis Schreier, will assume the role of Chief Executive Officer. John will remain actively involved through the end of October to support a smooth leadership transition and assist in closing out Farmward's fiscal year.
While his title may be changing to “Former CEO”, John's influence will continue to be felt throughout Farmward—in the culture he helped shape, the leaders he developed, and the vision he established for the future.
Because the greatest legacy of any leader isn't measured by the years they served.
It's measured by the strength of the organization they leave behind.
Thank you, John, for your leadership, your vision, and your unwavering commitment to advancing agriculture and strengthening Farmward for generations to come.
