Fuel for thought: Winter Safety & Preparation

Winter Safety & Preparation: Keeping Homes, Tanks, and People Safe

Winter brings beautiful snowfall—but it also brings serious safety considerations for homeowners, propane users, and the employees who serve them. A little preparation goes a long way in preventing interruptions, damage, and dangerous situations during the coldest months of the year.
Below are key winter safety reminders to help keep your property accessible, your propane system operating safely, and everyone protected throughout the season.

Clear Snow = Clear Access

Keeping walkways and areas around your propane tank clear of snow and ice is essential during winter. Clear access allows our drivers and service technicians to safely reach your equipment when you need deliveries or service—especially during extreme cold.
Be sure walkways, driveways, tank lids, valves, gauges, and access points remain free of snow and ice. Blocked paths or buildup can delay deliveries or prevent service altogether.

Regulators & Vents: A Critical Safety Priority
One of the most common—and most dangerous—winter issues is snow or ice buildup around propane regulators and vents.
Why this matters:
  • Regulators and vents must breathe properly to function safely
  • Snow or ice blockage can cause pressure issues
  • Blocked vents may lead to improper appliance operation or dangerous gas buildup
What you should do:
  • Regularly check regulators and vents after snowstorms
  • Gently remove snow and ice using your hands or a broom (never a shovel or sharp object to avoid damage)
  • Ensure vents are always visible and open to air
If you notice heavy ice buildup or are unsure whether something is clear, contact your propane provider for guidance.

Safe Paths Protect Everyone
Keeping a clear, ice-free path to your propane or fuel tank isn’t just a convenience—it’s a safety requirement.
Our drivers and technicians often work in early mornings, late evenings, and during less-than-ideal weather conditions. Slippery, uneven, or obstructed paths increase the risk of falls and injuries.
Help keep everyone safe by:
  • Shoveling paths promptly after snowfall
  • Applying ice melt or sand to reduce slipping hazards
  • Keeping pets secured during deliveries or service visits
  • Marking tank locations with tall stakes before heavy snowfall
A safe path ensures timely service while protecting both your household and our employees.

Plan Ahead for Winter Weather
Winter storms can arrive quickly and last longer than expected. Taking time to prepare ahead of severe weather can help prevent stress, service disruptions, and safety concerns.
